As we’re entering the final phase of my MA course in Interactive Media, I’ve been finding myself more and more inspired by everything Interactive. That being said I’ll be posting more content relating to our studies. So what is Interactive Media you ask? I’ve been posed this question so many times and yet still have trouble putting it into words so it’s probably high time I try to put it in a nice neatly packaged explanation for purposes of brandishing next time I’m asked. I’ll do my best here to explain without plagiarising too much from wiki.
The field of Interactive Media is the study of communications where there is interaction between a user and an interface. In modern terms it mostly refers to human interactivity with machines although the definition can also be applied to printed matter like books and boardgames. It’s related concepts are technology, new media, human-computer interaction, interface design, interaction design, user experience, physical computing, social media, digital culture and cyberculture. These concepts have a broad range for application which include but are not limited to interactive websites, mobile applications, interactive art, robots, artificial intelligence, ubiquitous computing, gaming, interactive narrative, virtual reality, augmented reality, and interactive advertising-just to name a few.
The term interactive refers to the interaction between man and machine which can have varying degrees of interactivity. That might be as simple as turning on an off switch to cause an outcome, or something as complex as developing a user interface for a new gadget or application.
Not sure if that made it any clearer for anyone except us people who are studying interactive media. I guess my next challenge is to break it down to even more basic terms so that people like my parents can actually understand what i’ve put myself in debt for. It took years for them to barely grasp what a graphic designer does in my early years after graduation.
So yea my point is… I’ll be posting more techy stuff but rest assured this won’t be turning into a tech blog by any means. I’ll still be posting design, humor, and art, just with some interactive media related posts sprinkled in.
